Now that we've got that out of the way, let's continue!

We don’t blame you if cleaning your hairbrushes isn’t at the top of your to-do list. But here’s the thing: It’s a beauty duty worth performing for the same reasons that cleaning your makeup brushes is necessary. “Cleaning your hairbrush on a regular basis will remove dirt, product residue, and oils from the scalp that accumulate on the bristles over time,” says Alex Brown, a celebrity hairstylist in Chicago. After all, the last thing you want is that gunk and grime to end up on your freshly washed hair, she says. Furthermore, spending a little time cleaning your brush will ensure that it performs better. Shed hair lodged in the bristles can prevent the brush from performing at its best and serving its original purpose, according to Shelly Aguirre, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. What’s the good news? Cleaning your hairbrush, regardless of its type, does not have to be a difficult or time-consuming task. Here’s how to swiftly and effectively clean hairbrushes (and combs).

Both specialists we consulted with agreed that the same (extremely simple) cleaning process applies regardless of the shape, size, or bristle type. Begin by removing all stray hairs with a comb or your fingers, lightly dragging all of the hair from one end of the brush to the other, according to Aguirre. Warm water and a cleanser are required next; Aguirre prefers shampoo, while Brown prefers antibacterial dish soap. Apply a drop or two of each to the bristles, then add a splash of water to make the brush soapy. “You can make sure the lather gets all over the bristles with your hands,” explains Aguirre. To keep the bristles’ integrity, Brown recommends only’scrubbing’ them in one direction rather than back and forth. Rinse after roughly 30 seconds to a minute of this. Rinse once more. Rinse once more. “You want to make sure there’s no leftover shampoo or soap on the brush,” Aguirre recommends, “so keep washing until the water runs clean and there are no suds.” After shaking the brush to remove any extra moisture, lay it flat to dry, bristle side down, ideally overnight.

For a more detailed step-by-step procedure, see the section below.

What You Will Require
Brush, comb (ideally with a pointed handle), toothbrush, glass bowl large enough to accommodate brush, light wash, towel
Take the Following Steps
Perform routine maintenance on a daily basis Every time you use your brush, remove the hair. In one hand, hold the brush, and in the other, a comb. Hold the teeth (not the handle) of the comb and slide the point of the handle through the bristles a few times to loosen and remove any hair. Alternatively, you can remove hair using the comb’s teeth by raking it through the bristles and lifting it up and out. Remove the hair and discard it.
Brush Your Hair With Shampoo Shampoo your hairbrush once or twice a month to eliminate debris, oil, and any built-up hair products. Swirl the brush’s head in a bowl of warm water while holding the handle. Next, apply a few drops of gentle shampoo to the bristles of a toothbrush and scrub the bristles and base of the hairbrush with the toothbrush. Swirl the brush around in a bowl of clean water to clean it. Tip: Avoid soaking your hairbrush in water because it may damage the cushion and any wooden parts.
Brush your hair dry overnight Place the clean, damp brush, bristles facing down, on a dry towel to dry overnight.
How to Take Care of a Comb
Brown recommends removing any excess hair from between the teeth and soaking the comb in warm soapy water for a few minutes. She also suggests buffing away any excess product build-up with an old toothbrush. Yes, it is that simple.

How to Clean a Dandruff Hairbrush

If you have dandruff, the brush-cleaning procedure still applies; you’ll just need to do it more frequently. While most people can get away with cleaning their hair brushes every two weeks, if you have dandruff, Brown recommends doing it every week to ensure you’re getting rid of that extra scalp flaking. If there’s still residue caught in the bristles, Aguiree recommends soaking the brush in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes (this will give the soap more time to break down the build-up) before agitating the bristles with your fingers.

Brown suggests soaking your comb in warm water with one teaspoon each of white vinegar and dish soap if you have dandruff and want to deep-clean it. Allow for an hour of soak time before rinsing thoroughly with warm water.
