Curly natural hair care, although it may be challenging, it is also a great experience.

Having short curly hair is fun especially during the summer days, and taking the time to learn about your natural hair and how to care for the right way it is the foundation for rocking fabulous short styles.

So here are some great hair care tips for styling and caring for your short natural hair!

Learn your curl pattern

One of the best things you can do as part of your natural hair care is to learn about what kind of curls you have.

Some curl patterns require a little more care than others to bring out the best curl definition, but all type of curls need a bit of help to really pop, so don’t get discouraged, keep learning about your curl pattern!

Get a good haircut

Once you have completely transitioned or done the big chop, you need some style to spice it up!

With short natural hair, your hair cut IS your style!

Also, a good haircut will help you maintain healthy natural hair.

If you are not sure about how to cut your hair on your own, you can consult with your stylist to see what style is right for you.

Use the right products

One of the things many naturals struggle with is, is using good products.

Products loaded with chemicals can damage and weigh your natural hair down, so go for products that are organic and infused with natural ingredients that help your hair grow your natural hair.

Great products make a huge difference in your natural hair care game.

Protect Your hair daily.

Since our hair tends to dry out faster than other hair textures because of its spiral nature, you need to add moisture into it daily if needed. have a spray bottle with a mix of your favorite leave-in conditioner and water (you can add some oil into it) for daily moisture. The thing is we want to keep our hair moisturized so dont over do it!

Deep Cleanse with a shampoo

You can use a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo which will prevent your natural hair from being so dry after washes.

Or you could try to co-wash your hair (meaning you wash your hair using conditioner only) to alleviate dryness as well.

You can start by cleansing once per week and take it from there.

Washing your hair (I prefer co-washing your hair) more often than this will be perfectly fine as well. Since your hair is shorter at this stage it is much easier to work with so if you decided you like cleansing 3 times per week go for it!

Condition, Condition, Condition!

If you use shampoo to cleanse your natural hair you need to always follow up with a good rinse-out conditioner.

Seal the moisture in your natural hair by rinsing the conditioner out with cool water.

Using cooler water will enable you to see a noticeable difference with the dryness you experience.

Deep condition To The Rescue.

You need to deep condition at least every two weeks!

Yes, it is for keeping your hair and scalp hydrated and healthy. Short hair dries out very fast so it is important that you keep the hair shaft, scalp and new growth nourished.

Get in the habit of deep conditioning as often as possible.

If you can aim to deep condition every two weeks, this will be optimal but at the very least deep condition once per month. A good deep conditioner will contain a hydrolyzed protein.

We will get into this more on the products page of the site. Cover your hair with a plastic processing cap and if you can use a sit under a hooded dryer or a thermal deep conditioning cap to help the conditioner penetrate more effectively.

Detangle

Detangle your hair while it is damp with a wide tooth comb and or a paddle brush. You can always start by using your fingers first to knock out any tangles that you can feel, then proceed to detangle with a comb.

Depending on the length of your TWA you may only need to finger detangle.

When you comb to start from the ends of your hair and then comb down to the root. It sounds strange, but trust me it works out better this way!

Try The LOC Method for Moisture

Loc stands for (Leave-In, Oil and Cream). Using this method seals moisture into your natural hair and helps you to avoid dryness.  Moisturize your natural hair and style as you want.
