1. Detangling your hair with tools too frequently.

Temi mentioned it briefly, but combing through your hair on a regular basis may not be the best way to detangle. You may prefer to avoid using any tools at all, in which case finger detangling will be your best friend. Yes, it will take longer than simply combing through, but you will likely lose less hair and experience less breakage using this method.

I set aside one (sometimes two) days a week to detangle wet hair thoroughly, mostly by finger detangling and, if necessary, by using a very wide tooth comb to detangle from ends to roots. Pay attention to how much hair sheds and how much of that hair is broken when you detangle; this is a good indicator of which method works best for you. 2. Using the incorrect product combination for your hair.

Of course, this is a personal preference, but whatever products give your hair slip and/or make it easier to pull apart and detangle should be kept on hand. There will always be new products and suggestions to try, but if they don’t work, stick with what works.

I believe we’ve all gone through this stage in our natural hair travels, especially Type 4 naturals. You already have to battle with breakage and dryness, so why would you want to make things worse by over-washing your hair? And there’s a grain of truth in it.

Excessive washing of Type 4 hair will most likely result in greater dryness, but a lack of washing and product buildup can also be a problem. A clean scalp is vital in maintaining healthy hair growth, as product buildup can cause hair to cling together and form knots. 4. Not using a deep conditioner or mask as part of your hair care routine.

Deep conditioners/hair masks may appear to be a time-consuming optional step, but they can make a significant impact in keeping the moisture, especially during the cold months. In the end, your regular routine will benefit your hair the most, but if your hair appears to be a little more dry than usual, it might simply require an extra kick for more hydration.
