Natural oils are produced by our scalp, and when too much product is applied on top of them, those oils have nowhere to go, resulting in greasy hair. We all know that using too much dry shampoo and not getting a scalp massage can aggravate these issues, but there’s another component of your regimen that could be exacerbating the problem.

If your hair isn’t moist enough before you apply shampoo, conditioner, or masks, it might lead to additional buildup on your scalp, according to experts. “Applying product to wet hair risks the product not entirely emulsifying and not thoroughly rinsing out,” says Garrett Markenson, a hairstylist and the founder of REVERIE. “This can cause accumulation on your strands and scalp over time, making your hair look oily.” Greasy Scalp

“It is preferable to use wet products on totally damp hair,” says William Gaunitz, FWTS, a certified trichologist (a medical and cosmetic expert who concentrates on the hair and scalp) and creator of Advanced Trichology.

What is the explanation for this? “If your hair isn’t completely wet, you won’t be able to emulsify the product properly, and you’ll almost likely leave behind additional oil that won’t be swept away,” Gaunitz adds. “You wouldn’t clean anything without soap and water, just like you wouldn’t clean anything without soap. Because of the high density of material within the soap, the water carries away the filth and debris that the soap breaks down; otherwise, soap residue would be left behind, causing other problems.”

So make sure your hair is well soaked before applying any in-shower treatments, according to Markenson. “‘Is my hair moist enough?’ ask yourself. ‘Could it possibly be wetter?’ “he declares “While a once-over rinse may suffice for some, thicker hair necessitates additional time to thoroughly immerse.”

Certain beauty myths indicate that applying product to dry hair will result in ‘better’ absorption, but experts warn this isn’t always the case. While it may not be detrimental to your hair, it could be the cause of scalp accumulation or oily roots (This is particularly true for those who have thick hair, as Markenson pointed out).

In this instance, it’s advisable to follow the experts’ advise and get your hair soaked! Apply product when it’s been well wet, and be sure to thoroughly rinse after you’re through. And there you have it: clean, shining, grease-free hair for days.

5 Simple Routine Changes Hairstylists want you to start making as soon as you notice your hair starting to gray.

Our hair graying is one of the most prevalent changes we go through as we age. This transition occurs as our bodies lose their ability to create melanin, the pigment that gives our hair its color and maintains it healthy.

“Our hair has three stages: growth, transition, and rest,” explains Diana Pratasiewicz, OUAI’s Director of Education. “As we become older, the whole process slows down, and we spend more time relaxing.” Sebum production diminishes at this period, and our hair requires that natural oil to keep nourished and shiny—so, in addition to the pigment changes, you’ll notice a difference in hydration. “As the sebaceous glands generate less oil and become linked to each hair follicle, the hair becomes dry, frizzy, and brittle,” she explains.

Because of these changes, it’s critical to provide extra hydration and nourishment to gray hair in order for it to appear and feel healthy in the long run, whether you want to embrace your gray or dye it a different color. Continue reading for five expert-approved ideas on how to give your hair the hydration it requires.

1. Use less shampoo and more conditioner.

Shampoo can strip gray hair of its natural oils and lipids, according to Jay Small, a hairstylist and co-founder of Arey, a business that specializes in gray hair care solutions. “Shampoo is beneficial for cleansing the scalp, but some shampoos can be too astringent for the ends, causing hair to look and feel dry, coarse, or limp,” he says. “I recommend that my gray hair clients shampoo their hair less frequently and use conditioner daily to help preserve the natural moisture of the hair strand.”

2. Purchase a shower head filter.

“Hard water contains heavy metals, minerals, and chlorine, which can cause color fading and damage,” Pratasiewicz notes. She recommends investing in a shower head filter that filters out harsh water to protect your hair.

During the winter, we usually turn on the hot water in the shower. Overly hot water, on the other hand, can dehydrate our hair by stripping it of the oils and fats that keep it nourished. Instead, Pratasiewicz recommends rinsing your hair with lukewarm water to seal in all of the moisturizing goodness.

4. Include hydrating items in your recipe.

Smalls suggests reading the contents list on your shampoo bottles and looking for shampoos with extra moisturizing components. “Hydrolyzed Barley Protein, jojoba seed oil, and shea butter are wonderful conditioners for the scalp and hair, and they can help prevent over-cleansing,” she says.

5. Locate a treatment mask

Treatment masks are a great method to give your hair a boost of nutrition. Pratasiewicz recommends using a silicone-free treatment on gray hair once a week to give it extra hydration and cure damage.
