20 Ways To Make Your Hair Less Greasy And More Fabulous

1. Try a messy top knot bun.

Make the most of your “slightly” unclean hair by opting for beautiful yet purposely untidy hairstyles. The grease will add texture to your hair, making the look easier to achieve. Messy top knot buns will always save you, no matter how many horrible hair days you have.

2. Don’t use conditioners on your hair.

Applying conditioner to your roots will undoubtedly weigh down your hair and make your roots oilier. Instead, apply a small amount of conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends of your hair.

3. Make use of dry shampoo

Yes, dry shampoo will not only absorb oil from your roots, making your hair appear less greasy in the short term, but it will also allow you to go longer between washes, making your hair less greasy in the long run.

Ingredients for a homemade all-natural dry shampoo:

2 tablespoons arrowroot/cornstarch + 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder OR 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch (for dark hair)
Instructions:

In a glass bowl, combine the ingredients and store in a glass jar.
Apply the powder to the roots and oily areas of your hair with an old make-up brush.
Comb the powder through your hair if you don’t have a cosmetic brush.
Apply before bedtime or at least 2 hours ahead of time to provide time for it to absorb.

4. Don’t go overboard with the brushing.

Brushing insufficiently prevents natural oils from being disseminated, causing them to accumulate on the scalp. Brushing too hard, on the other hand, can increase oil production. Simply ensure that your hair is in a healthy equilibrium.

5. Purchase the appropriate goods

Make sure you’re not using too many mousses or gels, as this can lead to a buildup. Also, stay away from “shiny” hair products, which can make oily-prone hair look even greasier. When at all possible, stay clear from these goods.

6. Don’t straighten your hair

The more oil your hair comes into contact with, the closer it is to your skull. Curly hair (natural or not) adds a little extra volume to the roots, preventing hair from becoming too oily too quickly.

7. Make use of natural treatments

Pour a little apple cider vinegar into your hair, rub it down your roots, then rinse it out the next time you take a shower. Raw, organic apple cider vinegar is acidic enough to help restore your hair’s pH balance while also removing debris from the scalp, yet gentle enough not to rob your strands of critical nutrients. It’s also delicate enough to use on hair that’s been colored.

For greasy hair, use a black tea rinse.
Tannic acid, found in black tea, is an astringent that helps prevent the development of excess oil on the scalp by tightening the pores.

1-2 teaspoons black tea, boiled
Tea leaves should be strained.
Bring to room temperature before serving.
Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp.
Allow it to sit for 5 minutes before rinsing and washing your hair with Pure Fiji Coconut Milk Shampoo.

8. Use the appropriate shampoo.

Select the appropriate shampoo. It’s possible that a shampoo designed for greasy hair is too harsh for everyday use. Choose a gentle shampoo, such as Pure Fiji’s coconut milk shampoo. It’s a natural coconut cleanser that removes buildup with ease, while exotic herbs feed your hair and scalp, restoring bounce and shine for healthy-looking hair. It’s also free of sulfates. Make sure your shampoo doesn’t have any of the following ingredients: protein, silicone, quaternium, cetyl alcohol, or stearyl alcohol on the label.

9. Don’t forget to wash your hair at night.

You’ve practically flattened your hair against your pillow during the night. Washing your hair at night may give you more sleep time, but washing it in the morning will give your hair more bounce.

10. Do not over-wash

You believe that washing your hair as frequently as possible will reduce the amount of oil in your hair. It will, unfortunately, backfire on you. When the oils in your hair are stripped too regularly, your scalp produces more oil, resulting in greasier hair faster. Try washing your hair every other day if you’ve been doing it every day.

Weather, sweating during a workout, or dancing the night away can convert anyone’s locks from a cascading, glistening, stunning head of hair to a limp, damp-looking, greasy mess. However, by following these ten simple steps and using natural products, you can rest assured that you’re providing your hair with enough of nutrients.

11. Use a sulfate-free shampoo to wash your hair.

Breaking news: Sulfates, which are found in most shampoos, are sudsy detergents that can over clean and dry down your scalp. 1 Your hair may feel squeaky-clean after the first few applications of a sulfate shampoo, but your scalp may overproduce oil to compensate for the dryness. To keep greasiness to a minimum, use gentle, sulfate-free shampoo solutions to cleanse your strands without depriving your scalp or hair of essential oils for strong, healthy hair. Polka believes that “anything clarifying will help control grease and extend your wash.”

It’s crucial to remember that if you’re attempting to avoid stripping your hair when using shampoo (with or without sulfates), the pH of the product is important to consider. “Look for a shampoo with a pH of 5.5 or less,” Emmanuel advises. “This manner, once the shampoo is washed out, the hair will not be as dry, and the scalp will not overproduce oil to compensate for what was lost.”

12. Between washes, use dry shampoo

If you can’t conceive without washing your hair for a day because your strands have gathered far too much oil, fight the urge and skip your daily hair wash. It may sound counterintuitive, but the less you wash your hair, the better. If you’re pressed for time, spray your roots with Batiste Dry Shampoo to keep your hair looking clean (even if it isn’t). Instead of using an unfocused spray of dry shampoo, try this: To ensure your entire head is covered, spray the product at the roots of your hair in little chunks from ear to ear. Friedman recommends using dry shampoo shortly after you’ve cleaned your hair if your roots become too greasy: “I apply dry shampoo directly to my roots after a fresh blowout so that as the hour passes and your scalp begins to create oil, the dry shampoo will begin working immediately to counteract that oil. Reapply as needed over the next few days to keep the oil at bay and your blowout looking brand new.”

But what if you work out? Working out at the gym, on the other hand, causes your hair to get oilier more quickly (and will need some freshening up). In this scenario, Thompson suggests using a sweatband to absorb sweat at the hairline. Then spray your hair with dry shampoo to absorb any leftover oil and wrap your hair up in a bun on top of your head at night. “I’ve only recently begun doing this,” Thompson explains, “but it definitely helps a blowout last longer!” If your hair is in desperate need of a rinse, simply shower with plain water and then use the dry shampoo after it has dried.

13. Experiment with a Texture Spray

Dry shampoo, as great as it is, may do more harm than good for some hair types. “If your hair is constantly oily, avoid over-dry-shampooing,” Polko says. Instead, she recommends utilizing a texture mist such as NatureLab.Tokyo Perfect Volume Texture Mist. Polko notes, “They’re wonderful for reviving hair on day two or three without adding too much oil.”

14. Tie your hair back

Depending on your hair type, your roots may appear dirty around day three, but that’s fine. The advantage is that the grease may be used to make casual ‘dos. Because these haircuts are elegant yet purposefully disheveled, a little oil and texture from dry shampoo will only add to their appeal. One of our favorites is a low, loose chignon held in place with a hair tie or a Kitsch little claw clip ($8). Alternatively, try a slick-back wet appearance on the penultimate day before a wash to work with the grease rather than against it. To do so, produce a styling balm with equal parts gel and cream that has a gentle, touchable hold, then rake it through your hair with your fingertips. No one will be able to tell it wasn’t clean in the first place.

15. Rinse with apple cider vinegar

On day four or five, you can cheat a little by rinsing with apple cider vinegar in warm (not boiling) water—hot water may be too drying. Many people believe that raw, organic apple cider vinegar, such as Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, is acidic enough to restore the pH balance of your hair and remove buildup while staying gentle enough not to deplete your strands of essential nutrients. According to Thompson, it’s also gentle enough to use on color-treated hair. While you’re in the shower, pour some apple cider vinegar into your hair, rub it through your roots, and then rinse it out. It will not only remove the oily buildup, but it will also leave your hair silky and beautiful. Win-win. Combine 2 to 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with a bottle of water to help balance the acidity.

16. Keep the number of items in your product to a bare minimum.

You can go as long as you want between washes depending on your hair type and texture, but try to go as long as possible (anywhere from every other day to once a week). After that, remember two things: Don’t overdo it with dry shampoo or styling products, and use as little as possible. Polko explains, “You overwork your scalp, which stimulates oil production.” Hairspray and lotions can cause oil buildup on the scalp, so avoid them if at all possible.

Friedman suggests just applying one styling product on the scalp and only if your hair is flat and needs volume. “When your hair is damp, the only product you want to use on your roots before blow-drying is a mousse or a root lifter.” One of our faves is Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse ($29), which gives hair a lot of grip without leaving a sticky residue or weighing it down over time.

17. Wash your hair with Clarifying Shampoo

Although it’s best to use as little product as possible when “training” your hair, if you notice accumulation over time, use a clarifying shampoo to freshen your scalp and style as needed. Gentle shampoos are great for everyday use, but clarifying shampoos work to deep clean your scalp, roots, and strands when your hair appears thick or congested.

18. Scalp Exfoliation

Scrubs are helpful for keeping your hair and skin on your head looking healthy and clean while also soothing a greasy, itchy scalp: “I prefer to use scalp scrubs to remove product buildup and oil. My particular favorite is NatureLab Tokyo’s clarifying scrub. It’s gentle but effective, and it leaves your hair clean and healthy “Polko concurs. Sugar crystals exfoliate the face, while sake water, grape stem cells, and pearl extract balance probiotics and antioxidants, while hyaluronic acid boosts moisture.

19. Allowing your hair to air dry is a good idea.

“Excessive blow-drying might cause your hair to develop additional grease,” Polko explains. “Rather than blow drying your hair, try letting it air dry.” Although air drying takes time, there are ways to make it go faster. “I recommend using a leave-in conditioner on your ends instead of an oil after washing because it keeps your hair looking fresh while reducing dry time.” Apply your products and leave it alone until it’s completely dry. Touching your hair too much before it’s entirely dry can cause frizz, especially if it’s wavy or curly, so apply your products and leave it alone until it’s totally dry. Weightless Gloss Air Dry Creme ($10) by Kristin Ess gives gloss and definition to air-dried strands while reducing frizz.

20. Add a Vitamin Supplement to Your Diet

“Your hair, skin, and nails reflect what you put into your body. Supplements are a fantastic way to get healthier, shinier hair “Polko concurs. Hair supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so their promises should be taken with a grain of salt. Even so, some people swear by hair supplements, so if you’re interested in giving them a try, start with one that claims to help with oily skin. Polko’s favorite supplement is Nutrafol, which is “high in omega-3s and B vitamins.” Always with your doctor before adding any supplement to your diet.

For a few weeks, combine these tactics with a longer hair-wash cycle, or until your hair feels less greasy. Fewer washes equals healthier hair and a more eco-friendly routine, giving you the best of both worlds. There are also some amazing strategies to grow your hair incredibly fast listed below.
