Permanently straightened strands, particularly after-straightening hair care, can be time-consuming. When you’re dealing with frizz and humid temperatures on a regular basis, though, long-term treatment can be a lifesaver. While everyone has their own motivations for choosing chemical straightening, there are certain general guidelines for aftercare. You may have complied when your hairstylist advised avoiding using sulfate shampoos, but in order to get the most out of your treatment, you must first understand how it works. Rod Anker, a well-known Delhi hairstylist, and Dr Harshna Bijlani, a well-known Mumbai skincare specialist, were called in to assist you to cover your bases. How To Wash Hair After Permanent Straightening

Let me start by saying that I am a proud curly girl. Yes, it took me a long time to figure out how to work with curls (the key: let it do what it wants, baby), but I also adore a good blowout. “Straight Story” by Judith Newman in *Allure’s February issue (on sale now)* grabbed my curiosity. Newman, who is curly as well, opted to try keratin straightening, which I am not a fan of but understand why she did. If you decide to go that route, there are some fundamental post-operative precautions to bear in mind. I spoke with hairstylists to find out how to maintain your freshly curled locks.

Will my flatiron and blowdryer be required? It all depends on the look you’re going for. “What most females like about getting a Brazilian blowout is that they can get away with a good natural look,” explains hairstylist Robert Vasquez of the Garren Salon in New York City. If you want your hair to be exceptionally straight and silky, though, you may need to utilize your heat-styling tools, which will take much less time.

Is it feasible for me to change the color of my hair? You can, but only after your straightening process is completed.

“The treatment starts with a clarifying shampoo,” says Vasquez. “The shampoo can remove color if it’s been applied recently.” To allow the color to properly process, clients should wait four to five days between coloring and straightening.

What are the various chemical hair straightening procedures available?

Your options range from Cysteine treatments through Keratin and Olaplex procedures to rebonding, in order of permanency. By dissolving the natural bonds in frizzy hair and replacing them with bonds in the correct structure, the latter will give you forcefully straight hair.

Dr Harshna Bijlani explains, “The harsh chemicals employed in these treatments penetrate your hair and dissolve the connections, causing changes in the shape and texture of your hair.” “While this is exactly what you want from a straightening treatment, it also causes harm to your hair. All straightening solutions are not created equal, contrary to popular opinion. Ideally, you should meet with a hair professional to assess your hair’s porosity, texture, density, curl pattern in various locations, and overall health, and then work with him or her to choose the best treatment for you.”

The items you can use after straightening your hair
“Any shampoo containing sulfates is a no-no since it is incredibly abrasive on the scalp,” Rod Anker adds. “To avoid future deterioration of your hair’s health, switch to sulfate-free hair products.”

“You might also try shampooing less frequently, once every two to three days. You can, however, condition more frequently if necessary. Dr. Bijlani recommends going to a hair spa once every two weeks to save your hair from sun and pollution damage.

Is it true that the atmosphere harms straightened hair?

“The atmosphere harms all hair, especially straightened hair,” says Dr. Bijlani. “You’ve stripped your hair of its natural oils and chemically treated it. This makes your hair more vulnerable to external influences including the sun, changing weather, and pollution. This is why it’s vital to follow a rigorous haircare regimen after deciding on a permanent straightening operation to avoid hair fall.”

What should my at-home haircare routine be if I have straightened hair?

Follow your normal haircare routine: wash every two to three days, condition every two to three days, or more if necessary. Deep conditioning should be done once a week or every 10 days because straightened hair is drier and brittle. After shampooing your hair, use a high-quality leave-in hair serum to keep it moisturized after straightening it. Start incorporating hair vitamins into your diet before your straightening appointment to help strengthen your hair and prevent hair loss and thinning. Aside from that, consume a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and good fats to strengthen your tresses,” advises the dermatologist.

“You must take special measures since chemical hair straightening is a serious procedure,” Anker explains. You can’t do anything you want with it and expect it to stay soft. “Styling instruments that are hot should be avoided.” “Use the cold setting if you absolutely must use a blow-dryer to avoid damaging your hair with heat,” Bijlani advises. After the treatment, avoid swimming or going on a trip that will expose your hair to the sun for long periods of time.”

Is it true that straightening your hair takes a long time?

“Keep a close eye on the condition of your hair and get a haircut every six to eight weeks. This will aid in the removal of any damaged edges or split ends. Alternatively, you may realize that a Keratin treatment is a superior long-term option for the health of your hair. It relaxes the hair but does not make it poker straight, and unlike the others, it does not grow out and create curly roots or flyaways,” Anker explains.

Dr. Bijlani recommends, “If you’re getting a hair color job, make sure you get your straightening treatment first, because most processes start with a clarifying shampoo, which could wash out your color.”

What factors should I consider while deciding between temporary and permanent hair straightening?

Make an impartial decision about which treatment will provide you the best outcomes based on your lifestyle choices. “Chemically straightening your hair will keep your tresses manageable for longer. You won’t have to waste time or money on daily hair treatments that use heat and cause harm to your hair. On the other hand, it disrupts your hair’s links, which can have long-term consequences by leaving your hair coarse and brittle. Dr. Bijlani notes that the harsh chemicals utilized might cause to hair loss and thinning.

“Temporary hair straightening treatments are really gentler on your strands and do not disrupt your hair’s natural connections. They may not hold up against severely frizzy or curly hair, and regular upkeep and maintenance may be required, which may cost money and time,” she says.
