“It is preferable to use wet products on totally damp hair,” says William Gaunitz, FWTS, a certified trichologist (a medical and cosmetic expert who concentrates on the hair and scalp) and creator of Advanced Trichology.

What is the explanation for this? “If your hair isn’t completely wet, you won’t be able to emulsify the product properly, and you’ll almost likely leave behind additional oil that won’t be swept away,” Gaunitz adds. “You wouldn’t clean anything without soap and water, just like you wouldn’t clean anything without soap. Because of the high density of material within the soap, the water carries away the filth and debris that the soap breaks down; otherwise, soap residue would be left behind, causing other problems.”

So make sure your hair is well soaked before applying any in-shower treatments, according to Markenson. “‘Is my hair moist enough?’ ask yourself. ‘Could it possibly be wetter?’ “he declares “While a once-over rinse may suffice for some, thicker hair necessitates additional time to thoroughly immerse.”
